Urinary Incontinence

Many people experience occasional, minor leaks of urine. Others may lose small to moderate amounts of urine more frequently.

Types of urinary incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence: Urine leaks when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting something heavy.
  • Urge incontinence: You have a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine. You may need to urinate often, including throughout the night. Urge incontinence may be caused by an infection, or as a neurological disorder or diabetes.
  • Overflow incontinence: You experience frequent or constant dribbling of urine due to a bladder that doesn’t empty completely.
  • Functional incontinence: A physical or mental impairment keeps you from making it to the toilet in time. For example, if you have severe arthritis, you may not be able to unbutton your pants quickly enough.
  • Mixed incontinence: You experience more than one type of urinary incontinence — most often this refers to a combination of stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

Mobility

ABSORBIA-UNDERPADS_3

Reduced mobility can be the major factor that leads to bladder or bowel leakage. An inability to reach the toilet on time can lead to incontinence even where bladder and bowel function is normal.

There are a number of important factors to consider that can affect product choice:

  • Whether you can stand & walk with or without help as certain products are easier to put on in a standing position; for example, pull-up pants (men and women)
  • Whether you can turn in a standing position; for example, this will allow you to move from a chair to a commode.
  • Whether you can move to the front of a chair or the edge of the bed, as tape-style diapers work better in these positions.
  • Whether you are completely bedridden, tape-style diapers are to the rescue for you and your caregiver.
  • For some people mobility changes from day to day or month to month. In this case, we have ranged our products according to the comfort of usage.
